Mammography

About 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. Mammograms are a lifesaver. They are quick and easy. Regular screening mammograms can find breast cancer early, usually before it has spread. Make it part of your regular health routine.

A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast used to diagnose unusual breast changes, such as a lump, pain, nipple thickening or discharge, or a change in breast size or shape.

There are two types of mammograms:

Screening Mammograms

Screening mammography is a low-dose X-ray examination of a woman’s breasts used to detect breast cancer when that cancer is too small to be felt as a lump. Screening mammography is carried out on women who do not have any symptoms of breast disease. They are used to detect breast cancer and other breast health issues early. Screenings are also recommended as follow-up care after breast cancer treatment.

Diagnostic Mammograms

You will be referred for this type of mammogram if you have an abnormality on your screening mammogram or if you have a breast mass or other breast change (found during a breast self-exam or by your physician). Diagnostic imaging may include mammograms with extra compression or magnification; mammograms shot from different angles or breast ultrasound.

What happens during a screening mammogram?

A female technologist will ask to measure your height and weight before your mammogram, which will be documented and other questions about your breast health.
The technologist will then perform the mammogram examination, placing your breast on an x-ray machine. A plastic plate will be pressed slowly to compress your breast and hold it in place for a few seconds.
You will feel some pressure on your breast for a few seconds during the x-ray. Compression is necessary to spread the breast tissue and eliminate motion. This may be uncomfortable and usually lasts no more than 10 seconds.
Four pictures are taken, two of each breast. If needed, the technologist may take additional pictures.

After your scan. Your results will be sent to your consultant within 24 hours.
